Banned Cigarette Ads

What types of campaigns have historically changed the stigma around cigarette use?
I'm trying to get at the reasons for the decline in cigarette use to see if such a model could be used to reduce the number of people abusing prescription pills.

That's a pretty good site to see the advertising. Think about all the anti-smoking commercials around today. These have helped influence the image of smoking. Do some research on specific campaigns and their success rates for more information.

Also, states have passed laws banning cigarettes in public places or where food is being served (including bars).

They are expensive and our economy is going to hell so people may not have teh extra money to spend.

Pay close attention to Joe Camel and Marlborro man ad strategies and the controversy. There was a huge movement to regulate advertiements which will give you some clues.
