Airport Cigarettes

Can a minor bring cigarettes and a lighter onto an airplane?
Can a 17 year old bring a standard disposable lighter and cigarettes in a carry on bag onto an airplane so they can smoke after they land? Or should they check it in? Or would they get into trouble either way for being a minor in possession of tobacco? I'm not asking this question for myself so I don't need a smoking lecture, but as an ex smoker, I recall being able to bring cigarettes on board but dont recall bringing a source of fire.

Hi sxidol,

In most cases a minor, under 18, cannot purchase or be in possession of cigarettes. If a minor is found with cigarettes most likely the cigarettes would be seized and depending on the jurisdiction they could face criminal sanctions from a fine to arrest. In addition, lighters are flammable and typically are not allowed on the plane, either in checked bags or carry-on. Best advice is not to bring either, cigarettes or a lighter, with you to the airport.
