Victory Candy Cigarettes

I am quitting smoking. Any advice?
To all of those who have given it up ~ I have been a smoker for almost 30 years (YUCH!) and I am sick of it. What did you do to quit and what helped you the most? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

I quit smoking 4 weeks ago, after having smoked for 38 years. :)

In August, both my mother and I went on the patch. This worked for her because she was ready to quit, but I wasn't. After seven weeks I backslid, and smoked about half a pack per day until the day after Christmas. That was a victory, tho, because up until then I had been a pack and a half per day smoker.

I went back on the patch for just one week, at the lowest dose, to get me past DAY THREE. So bad is day three that it's worthy of all caps. I know; I once quit for 10 weeks about 12 years ago. It was DAY THREE which kept me from trying to quit for the next 12 years, so you have been warned.

Anyway, three weeks ago I happened to leave the house for the day and forgot to put on a patch. It was late in the day before I remembered, so I knew at that point I had made it past the hump. There have been a few cravings, lasting mere minutes, easily overcome.

How you quit is entirely up to you. The patch worked for my mother. Had I been ready to quit in August, it would have worked for me then, too. I *was* ready to quit after the holiday fuss, and in the weeks leading up to Christmas thought to myself many times that I would be smoke-free by the new year. I rang in the New Year without a cigarette...

Being ready to quit practically guarantees your success. I agree with Scott; you stated that you are quitting. That's the key.

Choose a day you want to quit and mark it on your calendar. Depending on your determination, that could be as soon as tomorrow. Throw out all smoking related items. Get yourself some mints, stock up on carrot sticks, break out a new deck of cards. When the urge to smoke becomes too overpowering, suck on a mint or eat a few carrot sticks. Shuffle those cards (keeps the hands busy) and engage in a game of Solitaire (occupies the mind). Before you know it, that urge will pass. As has been stated, you might choose to work out or take a long walk.

It's OK to munch on a few carrot or celery sticks to get past a craving. It's not OK to munch on a candy bar or potato chips. Some people swear by avoiding those occasions where you would normally smoke, such as at the table with your morning coffee and newspaper. For me, it was on my porch with a magazine. I found it too daunting to give up my porch sitting, however.

As someone said, make it through the month and you're golden. I'd like to point out that if you can make it through the first week, you'll be really proud of yourself and will think twice before you reach for a cigarette and spoil it.

If you should backslide, don't see it as failure, see it as another chance.

Whether you go cold turkey or with the help of a non-smoking aid is entirely up to you. You've chosen to quit smoking, so no matter how you go about this, you are looking at eventual success.

Congratulations on making such a wise decision. Only the best to you.

I think im addicted to second hand smoke, How should i stop this craving?
My dad was a huge smoker. Its was just part of the norm to see him smoke. My grandpa smokes, my grandma smokes, my mom smoked, my cousins do, my uncle uses Snuff. And I've had my share of an herbal cigarette. A few of them infact. So, im thinking of buying herbal ciggs. I know this is really bad but if I do end up getting a pack what kind should I use and is it going to wean me off of the addiction of the smoke?

Well it doesn't have nicotine in them, so you're not going to get a fix.

It's like if an alcoholic switched to non-alcoholic beer.

Any smoke in your lungs is going to be bad no matter what.

If you want to avoid an addiction, you might just want to excersie self-control.

Self-control is the key to keeping a healthy lifestyle. You just have to make the choice to use it.

How does smoking work with anxiety?
I have anxiety, and I recently tried smoking cigarettes, and I seem to be very calm now. Does it really help to calm nerves? And on top of that, I feel kind of bad for smoking as I am usually against drugs or smoking and what not. Just asking!

Different people react differently to nicotine, but most people say it has a calming effect.

However, the calming effect of nicotine is very short-lived. This is how people get addicted...they like the effect of the drug, and they keep smoking to feel that way, rather than learning how to produce that same effect on their own. In many respects, it is very similar to how people get addicted to prescription anti-anxiety drugs like Xanax or other benzodiazepines.

I think it makes sense that you feel bad for smoking though--it is not good for your body, and it can become very addictive for some people.

I recommend finding other ways to address your anxiety. I personally find herbal tea to be a safer and more effective way to reduce anxiety and relax. The act of drinking a hot beverage can be relaxing, but there are also herbal teas that are safe, but have mild relaxing effects. I wrote an article on this recently:

http://ratetea.com/topic/herbs-for-anxie…

You can also gain greater control over your mind and body, and learn to relax more easily and readily, through practicing meditation, mindfulness, and through learning to confront your fears, and learning how to better understand and shape your thoughts and beliefs.

I also wrote a page about other (non-drug) approaches to anxiety:

http://cazort.net/topic/natural-remedies…

I hope you find these two pages useful! Good luck! You are right that smoking can have a relaxing effect, but you are smart to be wary of this, and you are probably wise to want to stay away from smoking and find better ways to address your anxiety in the long-run!

Why did the FDA ban all flavored cigarettes but not MENTHOLS?
All the different flavored cigarettes that was thought to be attracting kids is now banned but not regular cigarettes or menthols! Why didnt they just ban all of them? Why is menthols an exception? Isnt it the tobacco thats the health problem and not those flavors? Its like saying fruit and chocolate cigarettes are bad but regular and menthols are "ok". I have yet to see any kids smoking clove cigarettes but I know a lot of them like menthols!

Whats with this? Does the FDA or the Government have any brains?

Why is hookah sold to minors if the smoke is dangerous?
Ive read a few articles that say that hookah smoke is more dangerous than cigarette smoke. So, why is it sold to minors if cigarettes are only sold to people 18 and above? Thanks

Wow you got a lot of wrong information there.

First Cigs are way worse than hookah.

Second, all hookah products are regulated. You can't buy a hookah or any other tobacco product unless you are 18. Selling to minors is illegal.
