Cigarette Smoking And Lung Cancer
What is the mechanism by which smoking causes cancer?
No one doubts that smoking greatly increases the risk of lung cancer. But I have not seen the actual mechanism.
It is often said that there are many chemicals in cigarette smoke that are carcinogenic, but none are singled out as the cause or even the primary cause. There are carcinogens in practically everything we consume, so this does not answer the question.
It is also said that particulates and tar from smoking damages the lungs, making them more susceptible to cancer. Again, this begs the question of "how?"
Is the mechanism known or is smoking/cancer just highly correlated with no known causation?
