When smoking is injurious why it is not banned all over the world ?
Oh Yes, gradually it IS BEING banned all over the world, in varying stages of evolution.
When tobacco was 'discoverd' by Columbus during his voyages and introduced to the rest of the world, peoples from all over quickly adopted and began cultivating it. Tobacco, apart from giving a mild 'high', became addictive to people who consumed it--smoking, chewing, or snorting it as snuff powder. Soon, this was BIG business!
After the U.S. Surgeon General made a public health report about the definite harmful effects of smoking & tobacco [around 1980, I think], the health authorities made serious efforts in educating the public + helping people to quit.
Meanwhile the tobacco companies frantically advertised in third world countries, as well as wooed the youth to project smoking as "fashionable" and "Macho"--and MANLY!---so as to keep up their sales.
But as the harmful effects were realised everywhere, all countries followed the lead of USA in banning smoking in certain areas. Smoking began to be banned in all domestic flights, then International flights, limited to certain sections of the aircraft, then in most areas of hospitals, in many restaurants "No Smoking" areas began to appear.
Soon there are whole shopping malls, hotels, hospitals, etc where smoking is strictly prohibited.
In fact, passive smoking is even 4 times MORE harmful to non-smokers sitting near smokers! Hence, the drive to completely ban smoking all-together is gaining momentum!
From USA, the movement is spreading to other parts of the world! Bravo!
The USA has reported that the overall consumption of smoking cigarettes, Cigars, etc in USA has actually DECREASED [Cheers!!] since 2005 !
While people are dying from Cancer, etc, the tobacco companies are gasping from falling sales! Foreign companies like Dunhill, Benson & Hedges, Rothmans, etc in India too are desperately fighting to somehow increase sales, but are failing---due to better awareness of the harmful effects and education at various levels.
Soon, I am sure it will be a thing of the past!
