Hint Of Mint Cigarettes

What is the origin of the phrase "hint of mint" to describe someone suspected of being gay?
There is/was a cigarette called Lucky Strike. One of the additives used in the 1950's early 60's was a mint flavoring. Since it was supposed to be subtle it was called "a hint of mint". (The term could actually be older than that but the use by cigarette advertising in the 50's/60's is when I first heard it).

How it evolved into meaning someone might be gay, I have no idea. Probably came along with "light in the loafers"
I thought "hint of mint" was mint scented condoms.
